Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Too often, people see a rear-end collision and write the whole thing off. Despite what some believe, things aren't open-and-shut just because it's common for rear-end collisions to be the result of things like distracted driving or speeding. There are other possibilities that need to be considered to make sure nothing important slips through the cracks.
What was visibility like? What were the road conditions? Did the victim have a medical condition? Did their vehicle experience a mechanical issue, such as brake failure? Did the trailer's underride guard do its job? Was it in a state of disrepair? Was the 18-wheeler properly lit? Was there some other reckless driver involved that set of a chain of events not mentioned in the news?
Simply put, available details are still preliminary. Further investigations could bring to light all kinds of unique circumstances that folks might not generally consider. As such, it's best to avoid jumping to conclusions until all the facts have been cleared up. At the end of the day, the victim's loved ones deserve to know authorities aren't missing anything important.
