Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, one of the concerns is always about whether or not the crash it getting the attention it deserves. A lot of the time, authorities are quick to jump to conclusions, leaving victims and families out in the wind looking for a way to tell their side of the story. Generally speaking, a proper accident reconstruction can avoid these kinds of concerns.
What were roads like at the time? Did the vehicle have any defects? Have authorities pulled data from the vehicle's engine control module? Did other reckless drivers contribute to the crash, then leave the scene? Is there a lack of proper signage on this stretch of road? Is the area poorly lit? Did a tire blow out? Did seatbelts and airbags function properly?
Likely or not, these factors are important to investigate. They're the kinds of questions I'm used to seeing independent accident reconstructionists get answers to. Sometimes, authorities are also thorough, and they give those involved in the crash fair chance to speak for themselves. Other times, though, there needs to be an independent investigation to set the record straight. It wouldn't be unusual if that happened here.
