Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
If it's true that this was an accidental shooting, there is virtually no way it could have happened if the shooter followed the basic rules of gun safety:
- All guns are always loaded. Period.
- Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
- Be sure of your target, what's beyond it, and what's in front of it.
If these rules are followed, it's virtually impossible for someone to get hurt. It's important to know then if one or more of these rules were broken in this incident and how this can be avoided in the future.
