Commentary by Michael Grossman
The early days following a commercial truck wreck are the most important. That's when evidence is still fresh and intact, which means preserving ASAP should be a priority. That's why I've found these three questions helpful over the years:
- Are authorities treating the wreck as a top priority?
- Are the vehicles being inspected for potential defects?
- Is electronic data being preserved (from vehicles, cellphones, cameras, etc.)?
In my experience, victims and families can either rest assured if there are satisfying answers to those questions, or they can seek out an independent investigator if the responses from authorities don't add up. Either way, it helps put them on track to get the answers they need.
