Commentary
As I read through the news reports and comments from the public on this, I've seen some speculation that this may have been a rental van that experienced a tire blowout. To be clear, this hasn't been officially confirmed—it could just be a rumor. However, it is a good example of why it's best never to jump to conclusions after a serious accident like this.
All the preliminary reports I've seen on this accident say the van was on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred. That's bound to elicit all kinds of hasty assumptions as people jump to conclusions about the driver's possible actions.
But if people hear a rental van crossed over the median due to a tire blowout, they'll have a much different reaction. When was the last time the van was inspected? Was that tire recently replaced? Have authorities looked at the rental company's maintenance records?
So while this is just one possible (currently unconfirmed) explanation, folks need to understand that investigating these kinds of possibilities is what's important after a fatal accident. At the end of the day, the evidence needs to tell the story that the victim isn't around to tell themselves. Jumping to unfounded conclusions is only going to muddy the waters.
