Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle accidents don't always get the attention they deserve, and that can lead to incomplete or shoddy investigations. People tend to assume authorities have crack CSI teams who investigate serious accidents. More often, though, it's just an officer who happened to respond to the accident, and they're not always trained or equipped by their department to handle complex accident investigations. Things like defects, road design flaws, drivers unlawfully over-served by bars, hit-and-runs, and tire blowouts end up being mishandled a lot of the time as a result. Maybe authorities here were able to be more thorough—it would certainly be good to here as much. But in my experience, it's not prudent to wait around for the authorities when there could be important details slipping through the cracks.
