Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle loses control and overturns without any other cars involved, the question isn’t just what happened—it’s why it happened. The answers often lie in details that aren’t obvious unless someone looks closely and methodically.
Did investigators take a thorough look at the scene?
An over-correction leading to a rollover can be the result of several different factors, from a sudden obstacle to a steering input made under pressure. A complete investigation would involve mapping the vehicle’s path, measuring any skid or yaw marks, and analyzing the driver’s actions in the moments before the crash. Without that kind of reconstruction, the cause can easily be left to assumptions.
Was a vehicle defect considered as a possible factor?
Mechanical problems—like a blown tire, steering system failure, or brake malfunction—can quickly lead to a driver losing control. Stability control systems and suspension performance also play a big role in whether a vehicle stays upright after a sudden maneuver. Only a detailed inspection can confirm or rule out these possibilities.
Has all electronic data been collected?
Many vehicles today store valuable information about speed, braking, and steering movements right before a crash. Paired with GPS or dash cam footage if available, that data can provide a precise timeline of events. This evidence is time-sensitive and can be lost if it’s not gathered quickly.
By asking these questions, an investigation can move past guesswork and toward answers that are based on solid evidence. That’s the only way to fully understand what led to a crash like this.
Key takeaways:
- Over-correction rollovers require careful reconstruction to reveal the true cause.
- Mechanical inspections can uncover defects that may have triggered the loss of control.
- Onboard vehicle data can capture the exact sequence leading up to the crash.
