Commentary
With any single-vehicle wreck, it's important to ensure investigations have been thorough. I get calls all the time from folks affected by single-vehicle wrecks because they don't think authorities gave their situation enough attention. Authorities are certainly capable of good, thorough investigations, but it sometimes helps to follow up with questions to make sure that's actually happening.
For example, did investigators take the time to consider all possible contributing factors? People often assume a driver losing control means they made a mistake, but road hazards, weather conditions, or even other vehicles could have played a role. A proper investigation should account for all possibilities.
Did authorities inspect the vehicle for potential defects? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions or steering issues—can cause a vehicle to leave the roadway. Additionally, safety features like airbags and seatbelts should be checked to determine if they functioned correctly.
Was all available electronic data secured? Modern vehicles often have onboard data recorders that capture crucial information like speed, braking, and steering inputs before a crash. Additionally, surveillance footage or phone records could provide further context. If authorities didn’t collect this data promptly, key evidence may have been lost.
If authorities can show they considered these kinds of questions, it's generally a sign they took investigations seriously. However, if it's clear their answers are coming up short, that can give victims and families a sign to seek out a secondary investigation to help prevent important details from slipping through the cracks.
