Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a fatal crash involves multiple vehicles and at least one is a commercial truck, it's critical that the investigation does more than just document where the vehicles ended up. In my experience, the real story behind these wrecks often lies in what happened seconds, or even minutes, before the impact.
At this point, we don’t know much about how each vehicle was involved, but that only reinforces why a thorough investigation is essential. One key question in any multi-vehicle crash is which vehicle initiated the sequence of events. Was the truck traveling too fast for traffic conditions? Did another driver make an unexpected move that left the truck with nowhere to go? Was visibility a factor?
Those aren't things investigators can answer just by looking at the scene. They'll need to gather ECM (engine control module) data, which can show speed and braking activity. They'll need to pull cell phone records and logbooks to check for distraction or fatigue. And if any of the vehicles were equipped with dashcams or surveillance equipment, that footage should be reviewed immediately before it’s lost.
The fact that a life was lost here means there’s no room for guesswork or assumptions. If there's going to be accountability, it starts with collecting the right evidence and making sure every possible factor is examined, not just the ones that are easiest to see.
