Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With any serious truck wreck, it's important to know that steps are being taken to preserve time-sensitive evidence. I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases over the years. One of the most common mistakes I see from folks is they wait around taking for granted that authorities are going to do an exhaustive investigations. A lot of the time, though, authorities simply look at the surface-level details, look for potential charges or citations to file, and that's that.
If people want to tell the whole story, though, it's important for investigations to be far more in-depth. Road conditions, potential vehicle defects, driver history and training, intersection design, lighting and signage, safety devices and automatic driving or assistance features, cellphones, video cameras from nearby businesses or homes—this is all part of a complete accident reconstruction. So, if people follow up with the authorities and find they aren't looking into all of these potential factors, they may need to have independent investigators step in to pick up the slack.
It remains to be seen if proper steps are being taken to get answers here.
