Due to the accident, Jimmy McIntosh and Hannah Wasserman were reported deceased in initial reports. Later reports said that Maisey O'Donnell also succumbed to her injuries. The fourth teen in the vehicle was said to be in serious condition. No other injuries were reported for the 19-year-old driver and a passenger in the semi.
Right now, additional details about the crash remain unconfirmed as investigations continue.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While I don't know more about this specific accident than what's in the news, why is there not more information about the positioning, direction, and visibility of the 18-wheeler involved in this accident? In my experience, trucks making u-turns raise red flags. In a lot of situations, this maneuver requires trucks to impede traffic and potentially create unnecessarily dangerous hazards for other drivers. I've actually known some companies to fire drivers for even attempting such a maneuver. They recognize that it's often safer for the truck to drive a couple miles to find a safe place to turn rather than risk creating a deadly obstacle simply to save a few minutes.
That's why it's important in this situation to consider a couple of key questions: Why did the truck driver make the u-turn, and was the u-turn done safely? If evidence shows this truck driver took proper precautions, followed traffic laws, was clearly visible, and didn't create any unnecessary hazards, then it's likely the truck driver had no control over what happened. But if evidence instead shows the maneuver was done for unacceptable reasons, wasn't done safely, or even involved the truck cutting off the victims or failing to yield, then obviously that needs to be called out. Hopefully in the coming days, authorities can offer clarification on these basic facts and whether or not there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.
