Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It often shocks people to hear how often I get calls about single-vehicle accidents where the people involved feel authorities didn't give the crash any serious attention. Frankly, they're not often seen as a high priority. As a result, officers may not have the time, tools, or motivation to get clear answers. That's when important details start to slip through the cracks.
In my experience, it can help to be proactive and ask authorities some key questions. How much time did they spend looking into things? Did they analyze the vehicle for defects? Have they checked nearby homes for security cameras? Did they pull GPS and cell phone data? Have they examined the roadway itself for any flaws or hazards? Were they able to speak with the victim, or was the victim too injured to give their side of the story?
Ultimately, authorities may be able to provide satisfying answers to these sorts of questions. That generally happens when they're being thorough in their efforts. Other times, though, their answers come up short, and it can be a sign that the crash needs another look from independent investigators.
